In order to analyize and track your sites traffic and keywords you will need to install Google Analytics.
If you don’t have a Google Account nows the time to get one! Next you will need to visit http://www.google.com/analytics and enter a few peices of info about your site. Notice the account number you are assigned. It should begin with a “UA-”.
Lastly you will need to download a neat little Google Analytics plugin for WordPress. Simply install it to your content/plugins folder, then activate it inside Wordpress Plugins Manager. While in Wordpress, don;t forget to enter your UA # into the config box for the plugin.
This whole process will take you about 10 minutes and will give you detailed info about your traffic that is vital to the overall success of your site.

Tough economic times lie ahead and future planning is very important, so now may be the best time to start promoting a new blog or optimizing your existing setup. Search Engine Marketing and Optimization will provide a way for companies to advertise their products and services at little or no cost if done properly. DIY Web Marketing will provide business with a low-cost alternatives that will give you long-term results outlasting any other advertising campaign strategy.
In our series DIY Web Marketing we will start of with installing some plug-ins. We assume you have already have a blog and are up and running, if not please see my post on How to install Wordpress.
The first thing you will want to look into is a way to customize your Page Titles and Descriptions. If you have Wordpress I highly recomend installing the All In One SEO Pack. Simply upload the plugin to the wp-content/plugins folder and then activate it. Also have a look at the SEO Pack tutorial to get you off to a quick start.
Once it is setup you will be able to customize your Titles and Descriptions each time you create an entry. These two tags are very important and they remain one of the most overlooked components to acheiving and maintaining a good search engine position. Of course there are many other factors that come into play, but a page with either bad tags or no tags at all, will have a very tough time competing with any other related page out there.

There are two big choices when it comes to getting traffic to your site. You either pay for certain search terms using Pay Per Click methods like Google Adwords or you get your site to rank naturally in the search engines which cost you nothing!
There is a catch though. Do-it-yourself Web Marketing takes time and effort and getting your site in the top 10 takes alot of patience. But if you look at the cost of paid listings over time, I think you will agree with me that learning a few basic SEO techniques are certainly worth the trouble.
Over the next week or two I will explore DIY Web Marketing in more detail, and will outline the steps you will need to take to get natural and organic traffic that doesn’t cost a thing.
