DIY Web Marketing

There are two big choices when it comes to getting traffic to your site. You either pay for certain search terms using Pay Per Click methods like Google Adwords or you get your site to rank naturally in the search engines which cost you nothing!

There is a catch though. Do-it-yourself Web Marketing takes time and effort and getting your site in the top 10 takes alot of patience. But if you look at the cost of paid listings over time, I think you will agree with me that learning a few basic SEO techniques are certainly worth the trouble.

Over the next week or two I will explore DIY Web Marketing in more detail, and will outline the steps you will need to take to get natural and organic traffic that doesn’t cost a thing.

Free Internal Linking Tool

A tool I recently developed called DigMyLink compares the keywords used in anchor text to the resulting target page.

The idea of this SEO tool is to easily check your anchor text, making sure that it points to a page with matching or similar title and content.

Good SEO results from thoughtful internal navigation and overall site theme. I hope this internal linking tool will save you some time. Best of all it is a free Firefox add-on and installs in just a couple minutes.

WordPress provides a easy way to create and maintain an entire website. Although WordPress may look like a blogging tool it can be easily customized to look just like any other site.

The great thing about Wordpress is that many free 3rd party plugins have been written for it. By installing just a handful of content managment & SEO plug ins you will be on your way to optimizing you site in no time at all!

WordPress is also FREE. Ask me how I can setup and host your Entire website using Wordpress for under $10 a month! In fact BendSeo was created in Wordpress. Please let me know if you need help setting up a business or personal Blog using the Wordpress. My consulting rates are very affordable.

Optimizing Titles in WordPress

Although the Title tag isn’t really a meta tag it remains one of the most imporant factors when it come to your rankings. Its located at the top of your html code between the head tags along with other meta tags you choose to include.

Google will also occasionally use the description tag when related content can’t be found so its always a good idea to create this as well.

SEO Tip: I highly recommend a great plugin for WordPress called the All in One SEO Pack which will handle both of these tags, and overrides the Titles created by Wordpress. It also automatically updates your header info so you don’t have to mess with any code.

Simple SEO- Build your pages naturaly

I strongly believe in ranking a website using straight forward and simple SEO techniques. For the longevity and health of your site I believe your much better off spending time building good content rather than wasting time using “black hat” methods.

In other words when you build you pages naturaly and skip submitting sites to hundreds of directories, adding hidden text, script redirects ect… you will entually end up on the front page for certain search terms.

Using this simple SEO and natural approach I have yet to submit a site to Google. When you build your pages naturaly you will be automatically rewarded with good traffic and external links.

How to install a WordPress theme

One of the big advantages of Wordpress is that you can swap the look and feel of your site in just a few minutes. Wordpress uses what are called themes which consists of stylesheets and templates.

Installing a hteme is relatively a simple task. The installation process can be broken down this way:

  • Download & unzip the theme file
  • Upload the theme to your website
  • Activate the theme

Using a FTP client you simply navigate through WordPress to where the plugins are located: wp-content/themes/ and copy the entire theme folder there.

Activate the theme is very straight forward. After logging into Wordpress, go to your dashboard and locate the themes section. You will be presented with a list of themes. Locate the new theme and click on it.
